A couple of weeks ago, while waiting for my daughter at the Manhattan terminus of the Roosevelt Island Tram, I was attracted to a largely windowless tower a few blocks to the north. It seemed a remnant from a time long past, which indeed it was. Some investigation revealed it to be the warehouse of Day & Meter, Murray & Young company, which has been the storage venue of choice for New York society since it opened its doors in 1928. This building became more and more interesting the more I learned about it, revealing itself to be more than just a warehouse of physical objects, but a mainframe of urban memory. Its history is the subject of my feature in the Metropolitan section of this Sunday’s Times. Check it out.

I am the architecture critic of the Dallas Morning News and a professor in the architecture school at the University of Texas at Arlington. I am presently at work on a biography of the late architect Philip Johnson. I am also a contributing editor to the Architectural Review and Design Observer, and a Fellow of the Forum for Urban Design.

My most recent book, Master of Shadows (Nan A. Talese/Doubleday), is a political biography of the artist Peter Paul Rubens, who led a double life as a diplomat and spy. It is available in stores everywhere or via the web from your bookseller of choice. Praise for Master of Shadows is here.
My first book, Spalding's World Tour, was an Editor's Choice selection of the NYTBR. It tells the story of America's first cultural diplomats, an intrepid group of professional baseball players who fully circled the globe in the late 19th century. My research archive from this book was acquired by the National Baseball Hall of Fame, in Cooperstown.
