Glad Half Moon caught your eye, and thanks for the mention. I wasn't at BEA. Like David Sax I'm a Canuck and was a little out of range. But I'm intrigued by Master of Shadows. It would have made my art history lectures back in the day way more interesting.

[...] First, this weekend was the Book Expo America, the industry’s giant sales tradeshow, where book buyers meet publishers, and place their orders. My US publisher, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, had their lunches during the conference catered by the 2nd Ave Deli. They did so well, they needed to restock their table, because editors, writers, and sellers were going crazy over the pastrami. My friend Mark Lamster was there, and he got a copy of the book. He put it as the top book to read this year! [...]

random house had a single booth, with all sign of the imprints removed. they didn't even have catalogs left. it looked to me like bestsellers-only, and in any case there are no galleys of rubens yet--coming soon, and thanks--so i'm afraid it wouldn't have been an option. the one talese author who was to appear was pat conroy, and he sadly backed out due to health reasons.

Mark,
Random House had a booth, who decides which imprints are represented inside the dominion? There was a mile-long line to get an ARC of Jonathan Lethem's Chronic City, which is a Doubleday book, I believe. I would've waited in line for Rubens over Chase Insteadman any day of the week! Is this politics or money, if you can even separate the two?
